Weekend trip to Lucca

Italy 6

This weekend Melissa and I went to Lucca, a walled city about 1.5 hours from Florence.  Getting there turned into quite the adventure.  We got to the train station and bought our tickets.  Then upon realizing our train left in 5 min we rushed to the platform only to be told the train was stopped.  So we went back inside to try to ask someone what was going on.  while standing in line the person in front of us asked us where we were from.  She was from the States and backpacking across Europe.  She was with a friend from Italy who told us that the train workers were on strike that day.  They were headed to Pisa and since Lucca was on the way they helped us find the bus station and buy the right ticket to get to Lucca.  We rode with them on the bus to lucca where we stopped and they changed busses.  We probably would not have gotten to Lucca that day if it was not for them.  Thanks!

Once in Lucca Melissa and I found a hotel and then did quite a bit of window shopping.  A couple of notable places;

The Pizzeria on the plaza near where we stayed.  One of the ladies that worked there was from brazil and spoke english (not to mention being absolutely gorgeous).  We ate a whole pizza one night, straight out of their wood fired oven.

ReWine << .  A Wine bar that was pretty cool.  We had some nice wines and probably the best gin and tonic on earth (butterfly gin, try it if you can find it, then tell me where to get it)

Thats about all, there was lots of window shopping to be had.

An Italian car

A ferrari! What kind is it? It did not have a badge (430?).  I also saw a hummer today (H2) It looked SO huge compared to all the little cars (and of course it was obnoxiously parked).

Firenze and Siena

Castle walls

My host mother took me to an outlook above Florence and a castle near Siena.

Italy 2

I went to the Duomo today (then got lost for 2 hours)

Exposure Unit

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Just need to put in the glass

Here is the exposure unit that I made in 2007 with my friend May Yang.  (thanks for the Pics May!) Can you say pretty blue light? It has 10 actinic (420 nm) fluorescent bulbs totaling 400W! Made for exposing silkscreens, but other uses too.

Here are some pictures from Italy!

Firenze sunset

Check out the first glimpse of Italy.

Italian Cars

Friday, January 16th, 2009

In Italy one substantial difference from the States is the huge  (viral?) number of hatchback cars.  So far I have probably seen less than 10 non hatchbacks in 5 days.  The driving style and parking techniques are very impressive.

Hondata S300 install

Parts for Hondata S300 installThis is the Hondata S300 I installed in my ECU so I could tune my car (more on that later).  The S300 is an awesome tool that enables USB tuning and adds many features to the Honda ECU.

This is an LED bike tail light that I made in 2004.

POV 1.0

POV

This is a POV display I made in 2004.  I designed and manually encoded all of the font information as hex values for the code.  Little did I know that 4 years latter I would be doing the same thing except with Chinese characters and for OCR software.  It was some how less exciting the second time around but at least I was getting paid for it.

Plate Chair 1.0

Plate Chair rendering

I designed this chair to use one of the simplest forms of a raw material; a plate.  By making a careful series of cuts in the plate and then doing a series of bending operations you get a chair! Best of all no scrap material is generated.

RGB Box Lamp 1.0

green

I made this lamp in 2004.  The balsa and tissue construction worked very well.  The simple linear potentiometer RGB brightness control left something to be desired.

ModuLamp 1.0

ModuLamp 1.0

This is a lamp I put together one day in early 2004.  It uses a CCFL lamp and some vellum to make a functional and cool looking light source.  It is a visual representation of sound waves.
